What is the best place to live and work in Florida?

I’m thinking about moving to Florida in search of new work. I want to live near (but not in) a major city in order to be close to high paying jobs. I see Jacksonville and Tampa have some good growth in the IT sector. I’m not sure I want to be near Miami though due to hurricanes and crime. Anyone have any good suggestions where a family with kids would be safest but still be near a major city for work as I don’t want to commute over 40 minutes? Thanks in advance.

Ft. Lauderdale is a great city to live in. There are lots of jobs (it’s safe) and it’s considered a major city (maybe I’m biased). Thought I must say that Miami really isn’t as bad as the news often makes it out to be.
